An introduction to Earth Day and what it means for our industry

Growing out of the first Earth Day in 1970, EARTHDAY.ORG is the world’s largest recruiter of the environmental movement, working with more than 150,000 partners in over 192 countries to drive positive action for our planet. With movements such as Climate and Environmental literacy, Act on Climate Change, Conservation and Restoration, Food and Environment, and End Plastic Polution.

Earth Day brings environmental factors to the limelight, and their importance for all of us to focus on throughout everyday life. Including influences on the choices we make when purchasing products, even in the equine industry.

 

What Is Sustainable Fashion?

The fashion industry is responsible for over 8% of total greenhouse gas emissions.  Sustainable Fashion refers to a clothing supply chain that is ecologically and socially responsible. Now is the opportunity to shift the industry toward sustainable practices in sourcing, production, distribution, and consumption.

Without further ado, these are some examples of sustainable fashion:

• Ethical and Fair-trade Fashion - apparel that has been produced based on ethical trade standards
• Eco-friendly or 'Green' Fashion - Green Fashion is about making clothes that consider the health of consumers, and the working conditions of people in the fashion industry. Eco-fashion is any brand or line that attempts to minimize the impact on the environment
• Vegan and Cruelty-free Fashion - simply means clothing, shoes, bags, and other accessories that were made without using and harming animals.

Weatherbeeta - Green-Tec range

The ultimate fact is: The Green-Tec is an environmentally friendly blanket! Each turnout rug saves over 340 plastic bottles and each dog coat saves approximately 19 plastic bottles from going into a landfill or the ocean. That's not the only reason why this rug is a better choice for the environment; this rugs' fabric uses 50% less energy to produce than a traditional turnout rug.

The bottles that are recycled, are crushed and shredded. Then processed into polyester fiber yarn, which is then used in the fabric to create a Weatherbeeta rug.
