Tried and Tested: Pikeur Hanna Jacket

person riding horse

Becky reviews the Pikeur Hanna Jacket and explains why it's the ultimate jacket for winter rides!

This winter, I was lucky to be given the chance to try the Hanna Jacket from Pikeur. As part of their new AW range, this snazzy coat is the ideal winter riding coat. As I’m sure you’re aware, the weather has been very miserable, wet and cold the past month, but on the bright side, it made the perfect conditions to test this jacket!

Pikeur was founded in 1947, combined with the company Eskadron. Since then, Pikeur and Eskadron have become two of the most popular brands on the equestrian market. Pikeur’s products are of exceptional quality and their designs always fit the current equestrian fashion trends as well was meeting riders’ needs.

The Hanna Jacket is available with an option of two colours; Navy or Red. I chose the Red, as I was feeling the need for a bright colour for the incoming dull winter months. However, both colours look great!

To start with, the aesthetics of the jacket...

The Hanna jacket features a matt, sporty outer fabric which has a very soft feel. The subtle branding on the arm is a lovely touch, alongside the contrasting insert with a larger Pikeur print on the inside. In my opinion, this helps to display the brand without being too extravagant. A pleasant addition to this is the branding on the underlap and outer collar – the jacket features an integrated hood in the stand-up collar, perfect for both riding and wet weather. The bi-elastic comfort zone, shown in the contrasting mid-grey fabric across the shoulders, assists with the comfort and fit of the jacket. I also found this grey panel helps create a flattering shape for any body type. For the red, this comfort zone, as you can see, is grey and for the navy, the comfort zone is a navy shade outer fabric. Overall, this jacket will compliment your wardrobe due to it’s simple, yet effective styling.

Let’s get technical!

This jacket showcases the most important features needed for inclement weather – especially needed when riding or poo picking! It’s windproof and waterproof thanks to the taped seems, and it also introduces a jersey lining, with 145g wadding in the body section. This aids in keeping the cold chill out and your body heat in. When riding, the stretch lining in the sleeves allows more movement, therefore the sleeves do not run up your arm and expose your wrists to the cold. Alongside this, the 2-way edge zip contributes to better comfort in the saddle, but, most importantly, doesn’t sacrifice the overall look. The adjustable rubber cord in the hem of this jacket prevents the bottom of the coat getting caught on either the pommel or cantle of your saddle – we’ve all had the experience, especially on a deep-seated dressage saddle! So, to sum up the technical features, each one plays a key part in the customers comfort, and as I’m sure you can agree, Pikeur have paid very close attention to each technical aspect.

Now for my input…

I’ve owned the Hanna Jacket for a couple of months now, and in that time I’ve ridden in it multiple times. I must start by saying this is the warmest jacket I have ever owned – I even sometimes have to take it off as I get too hot! However, I need to point out I am not saying this jacket is not breathable (especially for the weather we have been experiencing recently), I personally get warm very quickly. I found the coat to be super comfy when riding, no lumps, no bumps. Each and every feature we discussed above really does help in making this coat wonderfully cosy. With a jacket this warm, you’d normally expect a bit of weight to the product, however, it’s the complete opposite. I noticed how silky and light this jacket feels when putting on and wearing, almost like being cuddled by a warm cloud – this is thanks to the effective styling and wadding in the body section. To finish with, the jacket is very flattering when worn. I don’t believe the imagery gives this jacket much justice. But as you can see from my photos, the cut and colour help to shape the coat extremely well. Some of you will be in the same boat, due to owning a horse, we don’t have much cash to splash. However, I would confidently recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a durable, lasting, winter riding coat!
