Eventing watches are specialist timers, and the difference between a purpose-built equestrian watch and a standard sports watch becomes clear the moment you are in the saddle. The watches here are built for riders, with countdown timers, large dials and shock resistance. Use the questions below to help you choose.

Choosing an eventing watch

What makes a good eventing watch?

A large, uncluttered dial you can read at a glance on the move, even when you are cantering to a fence. The buttons need to be big enough to use in gloves without looking down.

How do riders use the timer?

Mostly as a countdown. Set your optimum time and count down to zero. In cross country, switching between countdown and elapsed time shows your pace at any point. Some watches alert you as you near zero.

Does it need to be waterproof?

For outdoor competition, look for at least splash and rain resistance and a tough case.

How should I wear it?

Most riders wear it over the glove on the inside of the wrist, so they can read it without breaking position. A secure, adjustable strap matters for cross country.
