Peaked Helmets and Disciplines

Peaked riding helmets are permitted across the majority of equestrian disciplines, including dressage, showjumping, showing, hacking and general schooling. They are not permitted for cross country, where a jockey skull without a fixed peak is required. If you compete across multiple disciplines, it is worth checking the headgear requirements of your governing body before purchasing, as rules can vary between affiliated and unaffiliated competition.

Safety Standards

All peaked helmets sold for equestrian use must meet recognised safety standards. The most widely accepted standards in the UK are PAS 015:2011 and VG1 01.040 2014-12, both of which are required or accepted across most affiliated disciplines. Premium models may additionally carry SNELL E2016 certification, which represents the most stringent international standard currently available. Always check the specific requirements of your discipline and governing body, as standards accepted for showjumping may differ from those required for other competition contexts.

Standard and Wide Peak

Peaked riding helmets are available in standard and wide peak configurations. A standard peak provides the classic silhouette associated with traditional equestrian headwear, while a wide peak offers a broader brim that provides more shade and a more contemporary profile. Wide peak models have grown in popularity across flatwork and showing disciplines in recent years, and several brands now offer both options within the same helmet line.

Dial-Fit and Traditional Harness

Some models in the range feature a dial-fit system, which allows the internal fit to be adjusted using a precision dial rather than relying purely on size selection. This can make it easier to achieve a secure, comfortable fit across a wider range of head shapes. Traditional harness systems remain the standard on most helmets, with adjustable chinstraps that should be fitted so the strap sits just under the chin with room for one finger between the strap and the skin.

MIPS Technology

A number of helmets in the range feature MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) technology, which adds a low-friction layer inside the helmet designed to allow a small amount of rotational movement on impact. Research indicates this can help reduce rotational forces transmitted to the brain during certain types of fall. MIPS is increasingly specified on higher-end models from leading brands.

Fit and Head Shape

Peaked helmets are available in standard and round fit options across most brands, reflecting the variation in head shapes between riders. Measuring your head before purchasing is strongly recommended, as helmet sizing is typically given in centimetres and can vary between models even within the same brand. The helmet should sit level on the head, feel snug without pressure points, and move your eyebrows slightly when gently rocked forward.

How Often Should A Riding Hat Be Replaced?

Riding helmets should be replaced every five years as a minimum. Any helmet that has been involved in a significant fall or impact should be replaced immediately, regardless of whether visible damage is present. The protective foam lining cannot recover after compression, meaning a hat that has taken a knock may no longer offer its certified level of protection.
