What Makes a Good Eventing Watch?
Eventing watches are a specialist piece of kit, and the differences between a purpose-built equestrian timer and a standard sports watch become clear the moment you're in the saddle. The most important feature is a large, uncluttered dial that can be read at a glance while you're moving. Fine print and complex displays simply don't work when you're cantering to a fence or tracking your time in a dressage test.
Button placement and feel matters too. Competition gloves are a fact of life for most disciplines, so the controls need to be large enough and responsive enough to operate without removing your gloves or looking down at your wrist.
Countdown Timers and Optimum Time Scoring
Most competition riders use their watch primarily as a countdown timer. In dressage and showjumping, you'll programme your optimum time and count down to zero, keeping you on track without needing to do mental arithmetic mid-round. In cross country, the ability to switch between countdown and elapsed time gives you a complete picture of your pace at any point on course.
Some watches include an alert function that signals as you approach zero, which is a useful safety net when concentration is focused elsewhere.
Water Resistance and Durability
For riders competing outdoors, water resistance is an important consideration. Look for a model rated to at least splash and rain resistance as a minimum, with toughened casing that can withstand the occasional knock.
Wearing an Eventing Watch
Most riders wear their eventing watch over their glove on the inside of the wrist, making it easier to read without breaking position. A secure, adjustable strap is worth considering, particularly for cross country, where a loose watch is a distraction you don't need.
