Back Protection Without the Bulk
The Shadow is designed specifically for situations where a full body protector is not required or preferred, providing targeted back protection in a product thin enough to wear under a show jacket without any visible outline. The machine washable cover keeps the protector hygienic through regular use, and the slim profile means it can be worn throughout a competition day without affecting the fit or appearance of a show jacket.
EN1621-2-2014 Certification
The Shadow is certified to EN1621-2-2014, the motorcycle back protector standard. This certification covers impact protection to the spine and back, making the Shadow a recognised protective garment for riding disciplines where back-only protection is appropriate.
It is important to understand what the Shadow does and does not protect. The garment covers the back and spine but does not provide protection to the ribs, nor does it protect against severe torsion, flexion, extension or crushing of the body. It is not intended for cross country riding, where a full body protector meeting BETA Level 3 or CE EN13158 certification is required and strongly recommended.
Adult and Junior Versions
The Shadow is available in an adult version sized for women and a junior version for younger riders, with sizing based on back length measurement rather than clothing size. Careful sizing is essential to ensure the protector sits in the correct position to provide its intended level of protection. Refer to the sizing guide before ordering.
Transitional Branding
The Shadow body protector has recently transitioned from Airowear to Charles Owen branding. Products currently in stock may carry either Airowear or Charles Owen branding; the product itself is identical in both cases.
