There’s also some practical advice on how to look after your country boots to make sure they last a long time and look their best.

Why You Need Country Boots

A good pair of country boots is an essential piece of footwear for anyone who loves spending time outdoors.

Modern, stylish and functional, country boots are designed for everyday comfort and support while walking or riding. These in vogue tall boots are waterproof and made from either full-grain leather - often with suede – or faux leather upper, and include details like brass buckles or front lacing.

Being both exceptionally practical and fabulously stylish, wherever you go you will feel and look fantastic in country boots. Despite their good looks, they really do stand up to real work. For these reasons, country boots simply tick all the boxes.

Whether you are walking the dog on muddy country lanes, shopping on city streets, or hacking out on your horse, your country boots will provide exceptional comfort, classic styling and beautiful leather look. You will be comfortable and dry while also looking smart enough for any occasion.

If classic country is your style, this footwear won’t date or go out of style. Whether you are working in the yard or attending a gathering that calls for a pair of good looking boots, country boots have you covered.

High quality, high performance country boots are equally suitable for any country pursuits – long days at the yard, trips to shows, formal shooting days, following the hunt on foot -  or as casual wear with your favourite pair of jeans.

There is no need to sacrifice fashion over function. Country boots are perfect whether you are herding the school run or slinging the horses their supper.

If you are looking for something solely for equestrian use then riding boots or jodhpur boots are a better option.

How To Choose Country Boots

Choosing the perfect country boot can be confusing because it is a style of footwear designed just as much for non-riders as for equestrians.  With so many options in styles and materials, how do you know you’re investing in the right ones?

It’s all in the details.

Top manufacturers of country boots have taken the UK weather conditions into account when developing new styles.  Brands such as Dubarry, Ariat and Dublin incorporate the very latest technologies and innovations into their boot designs to ensure you stay warm and dry in all your favourite outdoor activities. Their range of country boots continue to live up to the high standards expected by providing:

  • durability
  • comfortable
  • waterproof
  • breathable

Some but not all styles of country boots are suitable for light horse riding. So, if riding is an activity you want to do when wearing your country boots, look for a stirrup-friendly design that will feel just as stable in the saddle as they do on the ground. A non-bulky design construction lends itself well to schooling or hacking out.

Let’s have a look at some of the popular options of country boots on offer and the activities they are best for, so you can make an informed choice.

Ariat Windermere H20 Boots

A classic countryside look, the Ariat Windermere country boots are regularly seen at hunt breakfasts and polo picnics.

Fashioned in a convenient pull-on style and constructed with a waterproof full-grain leather and suede upper, these boots are a stylish performer in any weather all year round.

The stirrup-friendly footbed, slip and acid resistant Duratread™ outsole and medial stretch fit panel make them an ideal choice for either a spontaneous ride on your horse or walk in the country.

The Ariat Windermere Boots look good with jeans and dresses. And, they are even smart enough to wear to the office.

Ariat Coniston Pro

With their stylish, sleek silhouette, the Ariat Conistion Pro boots are as fashionable and fabulous at the office or running about town as they are at equestrian and country events.

The lace up front, contrasting colours or the leather, and buckle detail at the top edge of the boots are lovely style details. The lacing is functional, too, as it allows the boot to be adjusted to give the perfect fit.

The full length zip in the back makes getting the boots on and off a breeze.

Even the premium waterproof, breathable GORE-TEX® membrane that keeps your feet warm and dry is stylishly designed in a plaid pattern.

Built with Ariat’s ATS Pro® technology, the Coniston Pro GTX® boots support hard-working feet to ensure all-day comfort and reduced foot fatigue whether you’re walking or horse riding.

These boots are made for year round performance with a Duratread™ outsole, rider tested traction zones,  and 3M™ Thinsulate™ Insulation to keep your feet warm and cosy even in winter weather.

The stirrup friendly and non-bulky design mean they feel just as stable when schooling or hacking your horse as they do when walking.

Versatile and great looking, the Coniston Pro GTX® Insulated tick all the boxes when it comes to fashion, function and comfort.

Combine country boots with a pair of cozy wool socks for the ultimate protection against the elements.

Caring For Country Boots

All leather needs care even if it has been specially treated to be waterproof. Your country boots are not the same as wellingtons.

Treating your boots to a little TLC will ensure their longevity – especially if you wear your country boots to do yard work or take walks on wet ground. Manure, waste liquids and salt are all corrosive to leather.

By investing a little time and using the right treatments, your country boots will stay supple and waterproof – no matter where you wear yours.

Follows these simple seven steps to care for your leather country boots:

  1. Rinse dirt, mud, manure, salt, etc. with clean cold water. Scrub gently with a cloth or soft brush if necessary to get rid of stubborn muck.
  2. Apply specialized leather soap or cleaner with a cloth or soft brush. Work into a lather. Scrub to remove more embedded dirt.

Note: Do not use saddle soap which can soften the leather to the degree that it may stretch, lose its shape and even collapse at the ankles.

  1. Rinse excess soap/cleaner from the boots with clean water.
  2. Dry at room temperature for 24 hours. Using artificial heat will dry the leather too quickly possibly causing it to crack.
  3. Spray a specialized leather protector over the entire boot. Apply several layers allowing each layer to be absorbed before applying the next. Complete this step outside.
  4. Allow the boots to dry naturally for several hours (according to the leather protector instructions).
  5. Apply specialized leather cream to smooth leather areas only (not on suede or nubuck materials) following the manufacturers instructions. Rub in gently with a soft cloth or brush. Pay particular attention to the areas on the top of the foot that flex as you walk.

Fitting Your Country Boots

Good quality country boots are available to fit regular, slim and wide calf sizes. To find the right calf size for the perfect fit for you, measure your calf at the largest point.

Compare that measurement to the manufacturer’s measurement chart.
